Our Environmental Policy

Tyres are tough and durable for very good reasons. The average car tyre will travel around 20,000 miles over its lifetime, travelling from A to B on a daily basis, keeping us safe and our cars too. The UK produces around 55 million waste tyres a year.

Although not classified as hazardous, waste tyres, if not properly reused, recycled or disposed of, can cause environmental pollution. Part of the risk lies with their chemical make up. Toxins released from a decomposing tyre or a burning tyre can pollute the water, air and soil surrounding it. Despite laws in place, many thousands of tyres are still illegally dumped causing communities unnecessary headaches.

Here at HiQ Easy Tyre & Autocentres we're constantly striving to find new and safe ways to re-use all the tyres we remove from vehicles. We are currently working in partnership with other organisations to identify and develop processes which can be used to recycle tyres and other disposable vehicle parts effectively and environmentally.

Currently our waste tyres are used for truck tyre re-treading, which can double the lifespan of the rubber composition used in both the car tyre and the truck tyre. Extending the life of existing tyres means that valuable raw materials are saved, fewer chemicals are used and there is a reduction in the number of casings that have to be disposed of. This has long been routine for aircraft tyres and has been technologically proven that the end product is as good as a new tyre.

There are, in fact, hundreds of ways tyres can be recycled and here at HiQ Easy Tyre & Autocentres, we intend to assist in the production of such useful and environmentally friendly products. Just take a look at the short list below...

To build roads, sports surfaces and playgrounds: Surfaces made of recycled rubber granules are a softer alternative to concrete or tarmac. The forecourt surface of HiQ Easy Tyre & Autocentres Nottingham, has been made using such materials. The result is a non-toxic and odour-free surface, which is impact resistant for safety and provides additional sound insulation (ideal for a busy car garage).

To make stationary: The range of stationary that can be made from recycled tyres is incredible. Products can be made very cheaply, yet last forever. Our Nottingham centre also uses in-store stationery items and merchandising including mouse mats, pens and note pads produced from tyres and other recycled car parts. Not only is it economical, it’s ergonomic too. Rubbers flexibility means a notebook can be rolled up without creasing the paper inside and the amount of tyres saved from landfill in order to create everyday products such as stationary, has a huge benefit on the environment.

As a building material: Technically any brick wall could be replaced with a tyre wall. Stacked tyres filled with earth provide a good, stable, insulated structure. Tyres will biodegrade in sunlight, but if they are rendered, they will last as long (if not longer) than a traditional brick wall.

Homes for sealife: Because of their durability and awkward shape, millions of waste tyres have been used to create artificial reefs in the ocean. The underwater environment keeps the potentially toxic compounds under control. Seaweed readily grows on them and evidence proves marine life have taken to the reefs as readily as they would a natural one. The tyres can also be used in this way to build up coastal defences; commonly referred to as rubber rocks.

As cement kiln fuel: The high calorific value of a rubber tyre, similar to that of coal, means they burn very efficiently. The method is more popular in countries where landfill is prohibited and are monitored by the Environment Agency very closely, compared to the UK where we have a long tradition of retreading and more diverse recycling schemes.

As an active member of the Tyre Recovery Association all the staff here at HiQ Easy Tyre & Autocentres, strive to represent and promote good practice within the tyre industry.
